    Five years after South Dakota replaced a failing, punitive juvenile justice system that emphasized incarceration and probation with approaches focused on rehabilitation and local services for youth, the state's investment has paid off in far lower recidivism, incarceration, and expense. Counties have financial, justice, and moral incentives to follow the evidence of what works and help teens improve their lives. The state also keeps the data needed to track what is working. Neighboring Wyoming does the opposite on all counts, and it has the wrecked lives and high costs to show for it.

    Vermont is the first state to pass comprehensive legislation that requires schools to include child sexual abuse prevention into their curriculum. Many schools have taken this new legislation and built their prevention curriculum around understanding consent and creating a space where children feel as though they can report their experiences. While Wyoming has similar legislation in place, they’re looking to Vermont as a model for taking a more inclusive, direct approach.

  • Farmworkers Feed Us. How Do We Support Their Kids?

    Children of farmworker families, many of whom travel seasonally during the school year, often need help filling gaps in the curriculum. Since the 1960s, the Migrant Education Program has been providing states with access to federal education funds meant to assist the children of migrant families with meeting educational requirements.. The money is used to provide different levels of support, from summer instruction to specialized curricula, in the states that continue to accept funding.
