Product Hub Africa (PHA) empowers people interested in tech by providing education, support, professional network connections, mentorship and community to help people blossom in the tech industry. PHA has partnerships with local secondary schools where they mentor youth directly. Outside of their school partnerships, PHA has 5,000 members with plans to continue expanding.

The Unique Abilities Foundation Africa empowers people with disabilities by hosting beauty pageants. Participants are connected to a fellowship opportunity focused on cultural identity, addressing stigma, boosting self-confidence, and developing leadership skills. They then take what they learn back to their communities to continue destigmatizing the way people with disabilities are viewed.

The Friends Advocacy for Mental Health Initiative (FAM) spreads awareness of the importance of mental health. It works to bring services like counseling and support groups to rural communities and schools. The Initiative’s Adolescents Save Haven Club hosts monthly sessions in secondary schools across the country, helping guide youth on their mental health journey, and has since helped over 300 students.

Kukana is a weekly radio show that helps locals who struggle accessing the legal system voice their grievances on the radio and get connected with local support and lawyers to find solutions. Over the past seven years, the Kukana team helped address grievances, from land disputes to human rights issues, for more than 100,000 people.

Some farmers in Sokoto, Nigeria, are cut off from their crops when the Rima River floods during the wet season. So, they use canoes, known as Jirgi, to ferry people and their harvests across the water.

The once-declining elephant population at Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is now stable because the rangers use the core-buffer model to keep them safe. To ensure they have enough room to live comfortably, the elephants are allowed to wander far into less-protected zones. But the park has a well-protected core patrolled by rangers that elephants can return to when they feel threatened.

By December 2023, the nationwide campaign had vaccinated about 4.7 million girls; however, Osun continued to experience pushback, with citizens resisting the campaign due to misinformation and a lack of understanding about the vaccine’s significance. The federal government also joined in, adding the HPV vaccine to its routine immunization system, which helped about 4.7 million girls get vaccinated.

The SecureCycle initiative collects jeans that would otherwise be discarded and turns them into backpacks for low-income students in rural communities in Nigeria. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of Nigerian entrepreneurs launched a digital education platform called Schoola, which allowed teachers to set up virtual classrooms and engage students with learning games, duels, and tournaments. The platform is now used in 110 schools across six Nigerian states.

Turnup Jigawa is a leadership program that provides mentorship around advocacy and communication with the goal of training young people to engage with lawmakers and community stakeholders. Students go on to spearhead projects in their own communities, such as one participant’s awareness campaign around environmental hygiene and another’s initiative to provide college and career counseling to secondary students.

Maha Technologies is a recruitment agency that pairs tech companies with skilled talent, particularly for women and girls in the startup sector. Maha Technologies helps those in STEM secure jobs while also fostering continuous learning, growth and skill-building through mentorship programs and training sessions.

The GIRL-H program provides skill training and business assistance to youth from marginalized communities. Participants receive education and training in an area of their choosing and once they complete the training, they receive start-up capital to help them start their own businesses. The program has helped over 6,000 youth learn a new skill and start an entrepreneurial venture.

Phola uses narrative therapy practices to empower women to overcome gender-based violence by sharing their stories and connecting with others. Participants report that Phola has helped ease their anxiety and depression and has given them the strength to leave harmful situations at home. The project began in 2016 and the Phola methods are now used in 40 countries.

Women at displacement camps in Nigeria are using a traditional method of saving and loaning money called Adashe to provide each other with financial support. The women in the Adashe group pool their extra money into a collective fund and split it between group members on a monthly rotation.

Farmers in Ndiob, Senegal, have returned to an ancient technique called zaï to combat drought, use less fertilizer, and increase their yields. Zaï involves drilling holes in the soil so rainwater can fill them and soak into the land instead of running off.

The Youngstars Foundation shares booklets with young girls of stories about women who have succeeded in their careers to inspire them to find a new sense of confidence and establish their own ambitious career goals. Between 2017 and 2019, 5,000 booklets were distributed to 4,500 young girls across 36 states. The Foundation also has an online module for the program, which over 18,000 young women and girls have signed up for.

Groups of women in Nigeria are forming rotating savings programs on WhatsApp because formal banking is often inaccessible. Essentially operating like an informal credit union, each member of the group gives an equal amount to a chosen admin, and a payout is given to a different member every month based on need.

The Women Radio Centre (WRC) works to empower the next generation of female investigative journalists, training them on reporting tactics to prevent gender disparities and promote reporting on women’s rights, as women are often underrepresented in investigative journalism. WRC also aims to equip young, female journalists with adequate training and connect them with job, networking and story opportunities. In WRC’s second year, 40 journalists have been trained and completed the program.

The Pakam initiative is taking care of waste mismanagement in Lagos with a digital marketplace for waste and recyclable materials. The app pays households for their recyclables and connects those generating waste with those who collect it to ensure it’s properly disposed of.

The community-founded Claire Aid Foundation raised money on social media to rebuild houses that were destroyed in Jebbu Miango after a violent attack on the town left families displaced and unable to afford to return.

Groups like Women in New Nigeria and Youth Empowerment Initiative (WINN), in collaboration with local leaders, are addressing stigma and providing support services for survivors of sexual and gender-based violencev(SGBV). These groups educate survivors on the violence they endured, provides them with a safe space to rest and engages them in the community to fight feelings of isolation SGBV survivors often face.

To enhance rural access to healthcare in Nigeria, the Parkers Mobile Clinic partners with local volunteers, healthcare professionals, educators, and community development advocates to identify and remedy unique healthcare gaps. Outreach programs are then designed to provide localized mental health support, nutritional counseling, and other reproductive health services.

To increase awareness of cervical cancer and the cancer-preventing HPV vaccine, Al-Ansar radio shares information about the disease, the vaccine and works to dispel speculation and misinformation about vaccines in general to those in underserved and hard-to-reach areas, as they’re often hardest to get vaccinated.

Gas flaring penalties have done little to prevent the practice in Bayelsa, Nigeria, so locals are calling for changes like diverting it to produce usable energy and creating strong policies to regulate it.
