To fight back against “woman inheritance,” a practice in which women are married off to a brother-in-law after the death of a husband, widows in Nyasoko formed a support group that raises awareness about HIV, provides microloans, and maintains shared land for farming. The group now has 36 members and has enabled widows to start their own businesses and take control of their health.

Non-pneumatic Anti-shock Garments (NASG) are emergency garments used during cases of post-partum hemorrhage that save women’s lives by compressing blood vessels to reduce excessive blood loss. Currently, there are 498 NASGs distributed across several counties and the use of the garment has resulted in a 38% reduction in the maternal mortality rate.

The group provides educational resources, mentorships and counseling, as well as access to pads and sanitary supplies within schools to ensure girls feel supported at school and no longer have to miss days or drop out altogether.
