During the pandemic the organization made and delivered around 500 To-Learn kits to students.   • Art Teachers Are Teaching Girls to Code

    Code/Art trains art teachers in a curriculum that combines art and coding, with the goal of inspiring girls to code. They also offer weekly clubs for elementary and middle school girls, a Future Female Tech Leaders program for high schoolers, and an annual conference to celebrate the girls’ achievements. Teachers who take the training can satisfy continuing education requirements by learning four lessons: an abstract art generator and donut maker game, coding self-portraits using JavaScript, and 3-D modeling. Facilitators are assisted by college-age interns, who are available to help in the classroom.

    The movement to promote science education and careers among people who are currently or formerly incarcerated is making slow but real progress. Programs like the National Science Foundation's STEM Opportunities in Prison Settings, and the restoration of Pell Grants in prisons, provide institutional support. But progress can be seen in smaller programs like the Prison Mathematics Project, begun by an incarcerated math whiz whose Italian mathematician mentor inspired him to overcome barriers to education.     After talking about solar panels with his students, a teacher at a middle school in Minnesota worked with the school board to raise funds to install a rooftop solar panels for the entire district. All five of the school district’s buildings have a 40 kilowatt hour display that could end up saving them up to $6 million over 30 years. The cost of installing these systems can be expensive, but this effort can save money and reduce a school’s carbon footprint in the long run and even be an educational opportunity for students.

  • How Jersey City Middle Schoolers Stopped a Flood

    In a science class in a local New Jersey school, students came up with a green solution to a storm water management and flooding problem in their parking lot when it rained. With help from the Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program out of Rutgers University and funding from city agencies, they were able to build planters and install concrete to absorb the runoff. The project galvanized the community, encouraging the school to expand their STEM curriculum.

    Some California teachers developed lengthy, involved lessons to teach elementary school students about the historic Mars rover landing, in spite of virtual limitations. A teacher in Kumeyaay Elementary in San Diego County had her students build colonies out of household materials and collected them later to be combined together in the classroom to share with students. Another teacher at Bell Gardens Elementary School in Montebello Unified put together a remote "escape room," where students were led on a guided exploration where they had to problem-solve in order to receive more clues and get to the end.
