Scoping out the Philly Innovation Scene

Solutions Journalism

Student (NOT Journalism School)

This collection was inspired by a student who used the database to prepare for job interviews in the Philadelphia area at start-ups and non-profits.  “As I was getting ready to interview in those places that I didn’t really know that much about or hadn’t visited, I could learn about the entrepreneurship space," she says. "Those stories gave me a really good foundation to understand what the startup world looks like in cities the news doesn’t talk about that much.”

The types of non-profits and start-ups in Philly vary greatly, and have only their location and social impact focus in common. But it is the dynamic nature of the industry that the student really came to understand after finding and reading solutions journalism stories.

Here are some of the stories she came across that provided her with vital job search information, such as:

- What is the best start-up doing?

- What type of Philly non-profit would you want to work at?

- What insights can you pull from what other companies are doing and elaborate on during an interview?

- How might a story about a non-profit in a different sector inform your work?

- What are some other states and localities that are doing innovative work?
