This collection examines how artists and art workers are advocating for fair pay for their labor. For artists in the United States, the Working Artists and the Greater Economy (WAGE) lead these efforts. WAGE has established norms for the compensation of fifteen types of artistic labor and has worked with arts organizations to help them commit to providing these levels of payment. WAGE’s compensation norms are also placed on a sliding scale, factoring in an organization’s annual operating budget to ensure that the organization has the capacity to pay. All types of organizations can participate.

The Art Handlers Alliance has established a ‘bill of rights’ that addresses norms for the compensation, working conditions, and benefits of art handlers. This organization developed out of the Occupy movement, and has had victories regarding compensation and hiring practices for art handlers.

In Poland, artists unionize to achieve better pay and treatment from galleries and museums.
