Chicago’s federally-funded Asylum Seeker Emergency Rental Assistance Program is helping migrants move out of shelters by covering six months of rent.

Denver Public Schools’ Community Hubs provide wide-ranging support for students and their families, from language classes and GED programs for parents learning English to food pantries, financial education courses, and mobile medical appointments. The hubs have served more than 4,000 families since launching in 2022, with roughly 600 migrant families being served this year.

The Kupalinka theater school is a space for adult and children refugees from Belarus and Ukraine to gather to learn how to run a theater and perform for the community. Theater classes help keep the culture and native languages of their homelands alive. The theater also provides a safe space for fun, creativity and connection, helping refugees manage the stress and grief of fleeing home.

Intercultural mediators are serving a small town’s growing Afghan community by helping attract new residents — particularly young refugees and migrants — to the region. These mediators help newcomers navigate hurdles like accessing documentation, jobs, schooling and health care in an effort to ease the transition period new residents often face.

Local legislature passed Driver’s Licenses for All in February, which ended the 20-year requirement that driver's license applicants must show proof of legal residency. This new legislation, which recently went into effect October 1, opens the door to the estimated 81,000 undocumented individuals living in the state to apply for their driver’s licenses.

With a lack of government aid and interference, border communities are stepping up to care for both migrants and local residents through efforts like The Sidewalk School and Casa de la Esperanza — nonprofits that offer shelter, programming and resource centers for migrants and locals in need.

As an increasing number of asylum seekers arrive in New York, the Mid-Manhattan Adult Learning Center has expanded its services beyond English language classes to connect students with food aid, help them get official identification, and put them in contact with legal immigration services. The center’s enrollment increased by roughly 40 percent to 3,700 students this year, but it needs more funding and support to keep up with demand.

Community food organization Fareground is providing free meal donations to migrant men staying in nearby hotels. The group is providing fresh produce and hot meals to those in need as the local government works to push the Biden administration to expedite work authorization for migrants.

Beyond Rising provides internship opportunities to undocumented high school students who are often ineligible for public programs such as New York City’s Summer Youth Employment Program. Participants receive a $2,500 stipend for the five-week internship and also have access to mentorship, skills training, resume preparation, and field trips tailored to their interests.

Anti-war Russians fleeing abroad are getting married in Tbilisi, Georgia, where the marriage process is quick and easy. The couples get married for a variety of reasons, from ensuring they aren’t split up when they get to another country to simply wanting to anchor themselves together during uncertain times. All that’s needed are translations of their passports, an appointment at the Tbilisi House of Justice, and two witnesses.

The Parent Educator Academy provides training in Spanish and English to help Latino parents in Arizona navigate a complex education system and advocate for their children at school. The program is now in its fifth cohort and has served parents from more than 30 schools in three counties.

Deliveristas Unidos started as a WhatsApp group for local delivery workers to connect, but over time it turned into a mobilized organization of thousands of delivery workers ready to take to the streets to protect their rights as workers. Through their organizing, the group managed to get a legislative package passed that enacted several laws that guaranteed their rights and protections, including access to bathrooms in restaurants across the city, transparent communication with delivery apps about tips, as well as hourly pay.

The Manhattan Afghan Resettlement Team (MART) helps Afghan refugees escape Taliban oppression and build new lives in the U.S. MART helps to connect refugees with the local Islamic Center for meetings about adjusting to life in the U.S. and language courses, as well as help getting a Social Security card, a job and enrolling their children in school. To date, over 100 refugees have been successfully resettled.

Recognizing the Stranger is a faith-based program that provides support and mentorship to immigrant leaders with the goal of building bridges between immigrant and nonimmigrant communities. The initiative has helped immigrants in the church organize "know your rights" events, advocate for expanded tax credits for undocumented workers, and roll out parish ID cards amid a rise in deportations.
